Overview

This dataset includes about 1,500 criminal justice agencies located in New York State. The Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) maintains a directory of criminal justice agencies. Each agency is registered with agency name, agency type, agency category, office address, contact telephone, etc.

The Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) supports all facets of the state's criminal justice system. The agency provides direct training to law enforcement and other criminal justice professionals; oversees a law enforcement accreditation program; ensures Breathalyzer and speed enforcement equipment used by local law enforcement operate correctly; manages criminal justice grant funds; analyzes statewide crime and program data; provides research support; oversees county probation departments and alternatives to incarceration programs; and coordinates juvenile justice policy. DCJS enhances public safety by providing resources and services that inform decision making and improve the quality of the criminal justice system.

To give New Yorkers the access they deserve to government data and information, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo launched the Open NY initiative in March 2013 and signed Executive Order 95. It directs state agencies to identify, catalog, and publish their data on the state's open data website administered by the Office of Information Technology Services (ITS). Open NY increases transparency, improves government performance, empowers New Yorkers to participate in government, and encourages research and economic opportunities statewide.

The agency type with the most number of agencies is Police and Sheriff (577 agencies, 37.69% of all), followed by Prosecution/Defense/Courts (373), Multi-Jurisdictional Agencies (193), Corrections/Parole/Probation (185), and Youth Bureaus (119). The most number of agencies are in the category of Police (450 agencies, 29.39% of all), followed by Public Defense Services (116, 7.58%), Youth Bureaus (106, 6.92%), Federal Agencies (93, 6.07%) and Sheriffs (64, 4.18%).
The most popular county of all agencies is Westchester (81). The other major counties include New York County (Manhattan, 71), Erie (70), Albany (67), and Orange (51). The most popular cities of all agencies are New York (71), Albany (51), Buffalo (32), Rochester (26), and Syracuse (25).
